A New Era in Air Medical Operations
Operating in the United States, EraMED is an innovative air medical service company, providing medical institutions with around-the-clock flight services that include pilots, maintenance, communications support and a diverse fleet of sophisticated twin-engine turbine helicopters.
The world’s first functional helicopter took to the air in 1939. Sikorsky’s open-cockpit helicopter, powered by a 75-horsepower engine, marked the beginning of the rotorcraft industry. Just nine years later, EraMED’s sister company, Era Helicopters, introduced the first commercial helicopter in Alaska and established a reputation as an innovative pioneer in air operations.
The use of helicopters for military medical evacuation first appeared late in World War II. With the ability to navigate quickly in and out of tough situations and challenging terrain, helicopters completed their emergence as air ambulances during the Korean War, when thousands of lives—military and civilian—were saved by medevac helicopters. The helicopter reinforced its reputation as the most effective method of medevac during the Vietnam War.
Because the action taken during the first hour after a life-threatening injury can greatly increase a patient's survival rate, the use of helicopters for civilian medical flights in the United States gained momentum in the 1970s, and air medical services are now an integral, lifesaving part of community healthcare systems.
Working alongside medical professionals, EraMED stands ready to provide safe and immediate air medical transport wherever and whenever emergency personnel are needed.
